General Information - Benefits

Ready to launch from Sorrento for a dive day.

Not everyone gets this lucky on a cray dive.

Come Diving with VSAG

The benefits of diving with VSAG are many. Aside from the camaraderie and fun of VSAG diving, there are numerous advantages to joining the club, including:

  • Like minded people to dive with. We have members all over Melbourne looking to dive regularly.
  • Mentoring - Learn more about diving. Increase your diving skills by diving with others. Experienced members are keen to help you learn more.
  • Adventure - New places to dive. New things to see.
  • Boat Dives - Members boats are available to dive from. Not for profit diving with new friends.
  • Information - Bi-monthly issue of "Fathoms" magazine.
  • Develop Special Interests - Photography, Ecology, Wrecks, Exploration.
  • Free Independent Advice - Equipment, sites to dive, trips away etc.
  • Social Activities - BBQs, Bowling, Wine Tasting, Movies, Charity events, and much more.
  • Life long friendships and contacts in the diving industry - Not just a club, it’s a way of life.

But wait! There is more...

One of the prime benefits of joining the Victorian Sub-Aqua Group (VSAG) is the ability to dive with some of Australia's most experienced divers. "Safety in Diving" is our highest priority and we ensure that less experienced or newly certified divers are buddied with experienced members. Help and guidance is available on most diving matters, either on-line or direct from our experienced members.

We are always happy to dive with newer divers, or those who have not dived for a while. Even if you are straight out of a dive course, you would be most welcome at the club and its events. However, to get the best value from a VSAG membership and diving with VSAG you should hold an Advanced Open Water or equivalent certification. Many VSAG boat dives exceed the recommended 18 metre depth limit for Open Water divers.

A big advantage of diving with VSAG is that you soon get to know your fellow divers. Experienced members also assess conditions at dive sites and are available to give advice and assistance. We believe that the confidence and accelerated skills that new divers acquire when diving with us are advantages that our club is able to offer. Our safety record is excellent. Whilst diving is restricted to certified scuba divers, prospective members, including non-divers and their friends, are welcome to come along to any of our activities such as nights out, day trips and weekends away.

You will find VSAG members to be a major source of information on where to dive and what you will see. Even better, as a VSAG member, you will have plenty of "dive buddies" happy to go diving with you.

Membership of VSAG provides you with a bi-monthly newsletter "Fathoms", delivered to your home. News of VSAG activities and stories from the world of diving. See some selected articles from Fathoms online here.

Membership of VSAG enables you to join in all of our social activities and monthly meetings. We sometimes run special dive days where the club provides the food, for example Champagne and Chicken Dive Days. The club has an annual Christmas Party at which we supply all the food for the members and families.

Other VSAG member benefits include organised dive weekends away. Indeed, it is said by many that until you have participated in one of our annual pilgrimages like those to Wilsons Promontory at Easter and the Melbourne Cup weekend, you haven't really dived. Why do we have so many long-term members of VSAG? Because they are simply hooked on returing each year for these very special drive trips. We organise air fills on most weekend trips away.

We also organise a variety of interstate and overseas dive trips. For these you can expect to pay about 20% less than most dive shop organised weekends away and at least 15% less for overseas trips.

We use members' private boats for most local diving which saves money. Each diver contributes $40 towards the boat owners' costs per dive day. This is excellent value diving given that most dive days see us doing at least two boat dives.

VSAG is a founding member of the Scuba Divers Federation of Victoria (SDFV). This provides VSAG with a voice to Government on diving related matters. Many VSAG members are also active in the Victoria Artificial Reef Society (VARS), the group active in getting the ex HMAS Canberra as a dive site in Victoria.
