Peter
Matthews (matthews@melbpc.org.au)
Edition 1: 26-Oct-2022
This is Stage 1 of a works-in-progress listing of the Victorian Sub-Aqua Group's (VSAG) early dives, outings, events, office bearers, meetings and newsletters over the period 1954-1970.
The current purpose of this page is to accumulate and record information progressively gleaned from early newsletters, journals, and other material held by Peter Matthews, a Life Member who joined the Group in mid-1955 as a 16-year-old. When new information is uncovered it is being inserted into its correct date location, together with a reference to its source document(s).
This page does not claim to be a proper history of VSAG, but just a listing that might be useful to others who want to create a real history. The year 1970 is an arbitrary limit, just to make this list finite and doable. Journals beyond 1970 are available but have not been processed. In later stages we will have photos and searchable PDF scans of the source journals to support the items listed herein.
This listing is available for anyone else to build upon or reuse under a Creative Commons licence CC BY‑NC‑SA 4.0 - (Attribution - Non-Commercial - Share-Alike). Basically, the listing can be used for any non-commercial purpose, but its source must be acknowledged, and the derivative work must be issued under these same usage terms.
The information listed on this web page is one person's interpretation and summary of material found in the listed journals. More detailed information can usually be found by referring to the actual journal entries. The source of all information items has been shown, and when the PDF copies of the journals have been loaded, the actual source information will be able to be read.
Note that some of the outings shown have been taken from lists of planned outings, and may have been changed at the time, or actually not occurred, typically because of weather; the associated source reference may help distinguish.
Caution: Please note that this page is still a works-in-progress which is added to or changed whenever new information comes to light. Therefore any information currently here is subject to change if better information becomes available.
The web page uses very simple HTML coding and embedded styles, and can easily be added to or updated via any plain-text editor (but not a word processor). If a version without source superscripts is wanted, this can be produced by uncommenting a line in the style settings in the "sup, #sourceblock" style. Similarly, Editor comments can be hidden by uncommenting a line in the ".edcomments" style.
If you want to print out this whole long page it will take about 75 A4 pages, or 38 double-sided sheets. The coding (HTML/CSS) has been set to start a new page at most main headings, and usually to avoid splitting a list item, a table row, or a paragraph.
Comments and sourced corrections and additions are very welcome. Further information may also be available in the VSAG archives, but these have not yet been searched, apart from supplying seven missing early editions of the VSAG Newsletter.
Further related photos (slides, negatives or prints) from the covered period are welcome and invited, and can be scanned by Peter if necessary.
NOTE: If you plan to do your own scanning, please liaise with Peter first.
There are several date-gaps in the material sighted so far, so anyone who can lend the missing issues for OCR PDF scanning by Peter would be much appreciated. The gaps in his material up to and including 1970 are:

After diving the Portsea Pier for bottles, 8 members headed for the Sorrento Back Beach with an offshore wind where a 7ft-across ray was sighted and studied. The party still at the pier got a good feed of abalone and recovered a set of car keys for a very grateful boat owner.148(p.7) |

Hopefully a BBQ afterwards.147(p.10) Four divers turned up at Mornington Pier in a flat calm and it was decided to dive the deeper water there as Canadian Bay was choppy. Sun 19 Jul | Frankston wreck. Boat.146(p.12) Site of the club's 'private artificial reef' so bring filling to build it up. A good feed of scallops can usually be collected here.152(p.9) Dive cancelled due forecast high winds and rough seas.153(p.6) |
Sat 1 Aug | New training course starts at City Baths. Contact Pat Reynolds.153(p.5) |
Sun 2 Aug | Snow trip.146(p.12) Cancelled due lack of support. Now house diving in Lake Eildon near Bonnie Doon bridge.153(p.9) Five divers attended but in the long time since the last dive here many road changes and new houses made finding the site for the farmhouse dive very difficult. Visibility at 10ft depth was 2ft, but at 40ft depth it was 10ft visibility.154(p.9) |
Sun 16 Aug | Portsea.146(p.12), 153(p.9) In very bad weather several divers finally arrived. During the driftwood BBQ arrived heavy rain and hail. Water very dirty - dive abandonned.154(p.13) |

24-25 Oct W/E | Grinder Point, Cape Liptrap. Combined diving and caving weekend with VSA caving group. Camp at Bear Gully. BBQ. Arch Rock.155(pp.7,8) A fun weekend was had by all. Many 4WDs. Serious scrub-bashing by 4WD and east coastal exploration did not reveal any significant caves in the limestone. Then a descent to a cave at water level at the end of Cape Liptrap saw Gordon Ryan off to hospital with a sprained ankle and a fractured ankle. Spit-roast and wine on Sat night. Sunday trip with 24 members to Arch Rock by 4WD along the west coast beach. Everyone's thanks to Sue Eager and Peter Robertson for the organisation, and the 4WD owners.156(p.6) |

86(pp.8-9), 117(p.4)
After VSAG's Research Division had been suffering from not enough members to finish projects, VSAG approached SDF to float the idea of an independent group devoted to research under the auspices of SDF. SDF canvassed its clubs and the idea was enthusiastically accepted. Not to be a group in competition with existing clubs but a complementary one for those wanting do do research-oriented projects. Open to any diver in Vic regardless of whether they are a member of any club. A minimum of 4 quarterly meetings. Rob Bricker appointed initial Chairman and Jan Watson initial Secretary. Inaugural meeting to be held Thu 5 May at Jan Watson's place in Essendon to establish aims, objects, work, etc. Change of venue needed for inaugural meeting due illness of invited speaker. Now at Small Lecture Theatre, Botany School, Melbourne University. The new speaker, arranged at short notice, will be Mrs Sophie Ducker, a specialist in marine algae at the School.87(p.6) Inaugural meeting an outstanding success with 43 people attending. Mon 6 Apr 1970 | Special SDF meeting at Melbourne University with 19 club representatives attending, to consider Victoria's response to the formation a registered company in NSW called the "SCUBA Association of Australia", and who were requesting Victorian membership. It was formed in response to several pieces of anti-SCUBA legislation that were passed in NSW since Jan 1969 and which were not objected to by the USFA rep and which the USFA refused to push for review. To copyright the name they need at least two reps in each state - so far WA, SA and Qld have joined NSW. It was decided that SDF would accept the role of Vic rep but would retain autonomy of its own affairs. But further clarifications were needed, and so two SAA reps would attend the next meeting of SDF in May for discussions.150(pp.10-11) |

[Ed(pgm): Note the subtle differences in the original names as printed above. And USFAV's undated Membership Application form that was inserted in the 1955/56 Annual Convention brochure stated its name as: Underwater Spearfishermen's Association of Victoria. Various printings of the name also display the wandering apostrophes.
See also a USFA name change to "Underwater Sports Federation of Australia". However in Oct 2022 the https://usfa.org.au USFA website seems to be a NSW-only organisation with the title "Underwater Skindivers and Fisherman's Association", although their logo on the web page shows it as the "Underwater Skindivers & Fishermen's Association".]
